Infrastructure The city’s wastewater treatment facility consists of an aerated lagoon system with rock filters and an excess flow lagoon. The design flow is 260,000 gallons, average flow is 210,000 gallons and peak design flow will accommodate 650,000 gallons. Residents are charged a minimum $4.33 a month for the first 1,666 gallons of water usage and $1.50 per thousand gallons above the minimum. Sewer rates are $5.83 minimum charge for the first 1,666 gallons and $1.50 per thousand gallons above the minimum. Prophetstown provides weekly garbage and curb side recycling services to its residents through a private contractor, Moring Disposal. The charge is $11.50 per month for garbage and recycling collection. Garbage services, with a different rate structure, is also available to commercial establishments.
Fire Protection Services are provided by a volunteer fire department funded through a property tax assessment by the Prophetstown Fire Protection District. The volunteer Ambulance Service is housed with the fire department in a centrally located modern facility. Prophetstown Police Department includes three full time officers. The department is housed in the City Hall building.
U.S. Postal Service is located at 313 Washington St. in a modern main street building with full window service including money order sales, express and priority mail. Hours are: 8 - 4:30 PM Monday - Friday 8:30 - 11AM Saturday.
Henry
C. Adams Memorial Library, 209 W. 3rd St. (815-537-5462)
Was donated to the city in 1929 by Mrs. Minnie Adams in memory of her husband, Henry, one of the founders of Eclipse Lawn Mower. The library contains 14,000 volumes on site and has access through the Prairie Area Library System (formerly River Bend Library System) to a wide variety of materials using the interlibrary system. Computers are available for public use including internet access. The library has large print books, books on tape, and educational videos and CD-Rom games for check-out. Fax and copying service are provided. The Echo, the local weekly newspaper, is available on microfilm and a data base is being compiled for genealogy research.. A meeting room is available in the lower level. Since the addition of the elevator the library is handicapped accessible. Monthly book lists are provided to the care facilities in Prophetstown and delivery of books is scheduled frequently to these facilities and to any homebound residents. The library cooperates with the school in providing programs for local students during the school year and hosts a summer reading program for elementary and preschool students in June and July.
